Vermilion 380 oil rig explosion: 13 workers rescued after oil rig explodes in Gulf of Mexico (video)
Just four months after the fatal April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon another oil rig has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. The Vermilion 380 oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico at approximately 10:30 a.m., September 2, 2010, according to reports by the United States Coast Guard. Thirteen workers jumped into the waters of Vermilion Bay after the explosion that set the production platform ablaze. One worker was injured and transferred to the Terrebonne General Medical Center, reports the New Orleans Times/Picayune.
Unlike the deep water oil rig Deepwater Horizon, the production platform was in the water at a depth of 340 feet. The Coast Guard says that the Vermilion 380 oil rig was not producing any product at the time of the explosion. An investigation is underway to determine whether any oil or oil byproducts are leaking into the Gulf of Mexico.
Mariner Energy owns the Vermilion 380 oil rig whose headquarters are located in Houston, Texas. Though the Vermilion 380 platform was not in deep water, Mariner does own and operate deep water oil rigs.
