Tropical Depression 9 now Tropical Storm Gaston, joins Hurricane Earl, TS Fiona as new system forms
It’s a busy week out in the tropics and as the east coast braces for the full impact of Hurricane Earl, Tropical Depression 9 is now officially Tropical Storm Gaston. Hurricane Earl has been upgraded to a category 4 after losing wind speeds earlier today and TS Fiona continues to make her way towards the Caribbean. Tropical Storm Gaston marks the ninth tropical depression formed in the Atlantic Ocean and the 7th tropical storm this hurricane season.
Hurricane watches and warnings are in effect for the North Carolina/Virginia border and extend upwards to Massachusetts' Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Tropical Storm Fiona has wind speeds of 60 miles per hour and much of the Caribbean has discontinued their tropical storm watches; Fiona isn’t expected to strengthen within the next 48 hours. Fiona is making her way towards Bermuda.
Tropical Storm Gaston has current wind speeds of 40 miles per hour and is located approximately 895 miles west southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. It is believed that Tropical Storm Gaston will become a hurricane as it makes its way towards the Leeward Islands.
Meanwhile, a fourth system has formed in the Atlantic. At this point, it has a low, 10% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone.
