A bill was enacted by the New Hampshire House and Senate, and signed by Governor John Lynch, which makes the state the sixth in the nation to legalize gay marriage.
The House of the traditionally conservative state voted 198-176 for the bill, which passed in the Senate earlier.
Lynch said the bill legalizing same-sex marriage will not force religious groups to conduct “marriage ceremonies that violate their fundamental religious beliefs.”
At the bill signing ceremony, Lynch commented, “It is my hope and my belief that New Hampshire will once again come together to embrace tolerance and respect and to stand against discrimination.”
Same-sex marriages are now legal in the states of Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York.
