The death toll from the Haiti earthquake disaster is approximately 150,000 and rising. The survivors, though fortunate to be alive have been left homeless and destitute. There are more than 600,000 homeless Haitians and tent cities are a testament to the earthquake’s devastation. Port-au-Prince, the capital city, has become a refugee camp and tents are now hard to find. For those who go without, sleeping on the street has become the norm.
In a desperate plea for shelter, the President of Haiti, Rene Preval, has vowed that he will live in a tent, and he has requested that 200,000 tents be sent to Haiti. To show his solidarity to the Haitian people, he has said that he will set up a tent in front of the Presidential Palace. The United Nation confirms that throughout the nation of Haiti there are approximately 1 million people without shelter.
The fight for shelter has become brutal and there have been bouts of violence sprouting up and thieves have taken tents that have been delivered to Haiti and are reselling them for profit. Tents are in great need and are in short supply. Those without tents have been using sticks and sheets to make some form of shelter, while others sleep on the bare ground.
Haiti's Tent Cities
Women gather pots among tents made of bed sheets and sticks at a makeshift refugee camp in Port-au-Prince, Monday, Jan. 25, 2010. In the wake of the Jan. 12 earthquake, as many as 1 million people need to find new shelter, the United Nations estimates, and there are too few tents, let alone safe buildings, to put them in.
