Bodies of the dead are being carried away by trucks and buried in mass graves. It is feared that many will never know the true fate of their loved ones and friends. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that there is little more that can be done than to guess at the total number of dead and injured. He said that there are estimates but at this time, there is no point in his speculating casualty figures. Haitian officials have stated that they believe the number of casualties to be above 100,000.

7.0 Haiti earthquake leaves country in ruins

Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton have joined forces, forming the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. They are requesting financial donations to assist in relief and recovery efforts. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton’s wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Haiti today for a first hand view of the disaster. As aid is being distributed throughout the country, people are waiting in extremely long lines and a clear organized system has not yet been create. The distribution of aid is being conducted as best as can be under the extreme circumstances.

Though time is running out for recovery efforts, the United States has said that search and rescue efforts remain in full force. Most earthquake victims are expected to last no longer than 3-4 days following an earthquake, while being pinned under rubble. The longest surviving victim of an earthquake was found alive after 14 days, so there is hope left. Many are using all resources available to find survivors and to free them from their confines.

President Obama reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to helping Haiti earlier today.

By coming together in this way, these two leaders send an unmistakable message to the people of Haiti and to the people of the world.

In these difficult hours, America stands united. We stand united with the people of Haiti who have shown such incredible resilience and we'll help them to recover and to rebuild.  President Obama
