Tuesday evening, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a black tie dinner for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The president told Singh at a welcoming ceremony, “Your visit, at this pivotal moment in history, speaks to the opportunity before us to build the relationship between our nations… into one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century.”
Reuters reports that the first state visit of Obama’s presidency is meant to strengthen America’s commitment to increasing ties with India.
Singh said, “We seek to broaden and deepen our strategic partnership,” according to Reuters.
The Hindustan Times reports the dinner became one of the hottest tickets in Washington DC with a guest list filled with celebrities and politicians. Some of those in the black tie dinner guest list included spiritual advisor Deepak Chopra, CBS News’ Katie Couric, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, actor Blair Underwood, filmmaker Steven Spielberg, and Attorney General Eric Holder.
