People Magazine has published this year’s list of the Sexiest Man Alive and the top winner is Johnny Depp. These 15 hunks run the gamut from actors and sports players to singers and musicians. The Sexiest Man Alive features the nation’s most attractive males and is an annual feature.
According to reports, the special feature was originated by none other than Mel Gibson. The story says that one female editor was reviewing a story for Mel Gibson back in 1985, when suddenly she remarked that Mel was the sexiest man alive. Someone commented to her that the Sexiest Man Alive should become a cover story, and the rest, as they say is history.
Needless to say, the first man chosen for the honor was Mel Gibson, he was crowned Sexiest Man on February 4, 1985. Here is a listing of previous winners and the years they were selected.

1987- Harry Hamlin
1988- John F. Kennedy, Jr.
1989- Sean Connery
1990-Tom Cruise
1991- Patrick Swayze
1992- Nick Nolte
1993- Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford (in 1993, People Magazine decided to crown Sexiest Couple Alive instead of just Sexiest Man, they also took a one year break and skipped 1994)
1995- Brad Pitt- Apparently, Brad Pitt was enough to get the awards going again.

Of the entire list of winners, only George Clooney, Richard Gere, Brad Pit, and Johnny Depp have won the award twice.
Over the years, the timing of the Sexiest Man Alive award has shifted from winter months to fall. Currently, the feature is released between the middle of November and the beginning of December.

How sexy was Depp when he was seen leaving a club being held up by his security because he was DRUNK. Not sexy.
