Oasis of the Seas is the newest cruise ship in the Royal Caribbean International fleet. She is the world’s largest passenger ship and made her grand debut to the public this week. Oasis of the Seas will make its first passenger launch on December 1, 2009. This morning, the entire crew of Good Morning America filmed from the cruise ship, you can view the cruise ship and the crew of GMA in the video below.
Originally designed under the name “Project Genesis”, the beginnings of Oasis of the Seas started in February 2006. A contest was held to determine the name; George Weiser of Livonia, Michigan submitted the winning name, Oasis of the Seas. Another cruise ship in the fleet will debut next year; its name is Allure of the Seas. The names were well received by Royal Caribbean as this statement reveals, “I don’t think we would have come up with Oasis and Allure on our own,” said Royal Caribbean CEO Adam Goldstein. “They were great names.”
Oasis of the seas offers a plethora of options for guests. According to Royal Caribbean, the ships will feature an original concept called ‘neighborhoods.’ These neighborhoods boast amenities to ensure that every passenger has an amazing and breathtaking experience. Oasis of the Seas features the Central Park neighborhood. Within the neighborhood are 80 Park view window staterooms, 254 Park view balcony staterooms, four of these rooms are wheelchair accessible, 7 restaurants, cafes, and bars, boutique shops, three landscaped gardens: The Pergola Garden, The Sculpture Garden, and The Chess Garden. The garden consists of 12, 175 plants, 62 vine plants, 56 trees and bamboo. Oasis of the Seas boasts 7,000 works of specially commissioned art.
Considered an architectural marvel at sea Oasis of the Seas spans 16 decks, is 225,282 Gross Tons, is 1,187 feet long, 208 feet wide, has 24 passenger elevators, seats a total of 6,296t guests, and carries a crew of 2,165 members. Other feature amenities include the 17.9 or 5.4 meters deep AquaTheater pool, which is the largest pool at sea, a casino, volleyball and basketball courts and a mini golf course.
