Slideshow: Nashville flooding kills 12, death toll climbing (live video)
Catastrophic flooding has left 12 dead in the state of Tennessee and has given the city a record no one want to see: 13.06” of water in just two days. According to severe weather expert Dr. Forbes, the previous two day rainfall record was 6”. Nashville saw 7” of rainfall today alone. Heavy rain and flooding are expected to continue throughout the night, but the consequences of the extreme weather will have much longer impact. Today, Tennessee officials announced that the death toll has been raised to 8.
Numerous roads have been affected and Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen has told all citizens to stay home and away from the roads. At 3:00 p.m., today, May 2, 2010, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency issued a status report stating that there have been eight confirmed fatalities.
Two fatalities each were reported in Carroll and Stewart Counties. One fatality each have been reported in Hickman, Hardeman, Davidson, and Williamson counties. Approximately 267 nursing home patients have been evacuated and more than 150 roads are closed in middle Tennessee. There are more than 70,000 residents without power across Tennessee.
The American Red Cross is on the scene and has reported approximately 400 people are staying in 22 shelters.
