Slideshow: Lindsey Vonn crashes in Giant Slalom, Olympics 2010
In a shocking turn of events, Gold medalist American skier, Lindsey Vonn crashed during the first run of the Giant Slalom Olympic event and is said to have injured the little finger of her right hand.
She described the accident shortly afterwards and said that the course has broken up at the bottom. “I got a little bit too inside and lost my outside ski. My knee came up and hit my chin.”
The injury to her right finger was serious and after finishing the course, she left the race and underwent x-rays. It is unclear whether or not she’ll compete in Friday’s race. Lindsey said that she was tangled up and felt like a pretzel but hoped she would be able to compete during Friday’s Giant Slalom competition.
The fall comes as a crushing blow to Lindsey who has stated that the Giant Slalom is her worst event. Today, before the crash, she was holding her own and was in good position to place first. Her husband and fellow skier Thomas Vonn said, “She was in contention to win. To put four-tenths on this field from No. 17 is incredible. You can win 99 percent of the way and not have anything."
The crash impacted fellow silver medalist and defending champion, Julia Mancuso as she needed to restart at a later time. Mancuso finished 18th. Lindsey Vonn was eliminated.
