On the sixth day following a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the nation of Haiti, earthquake victims continue to wait for aid. There is no flowing water in Port-Au-Prince, no electricity, and communications are down. Though the world has gathered together to supply much needed aid and relief, there is still difficulty getting aid to survivors and victims. Rescue efforts continue and it is believed that there are still survivors trapped under the rubble.

The race for aid in Haiti (photos, slideshow, videos)

As roads remain impassable, much aid has been delivered by helicopter drop. This, however, is not the most effective way. Rescue workers race against time, but it is believed that those who are sick, injured, or too weak to move are not being helped by helicopter drops. Volunteers continue to search for the most effective ways to distribute aid to those in need.

Representative Kendrick Meek from Florida spoke about the situation. He stated, “If we don't get water, if we don't get shelter, if we don't get security right behind me, it's going to end up being a situation. I know. We've seen it before here in Haiti. And now it's exacerbated by the fact that folks don't have homes and they can't get out to provide for themselves.

So right now they need some serious, serious assistance. And I know the 82nd Airborne is grouping themselves to be able to provide that security. But you have the U.N. here. You have the 82nd. And so it's important that they come together to be able to make sure that they bring about not only security but also humanitarian - meeting humanitarian needs of thousands of people that are living on the streets.
As victims wait for aid, the threat of looting continues to increase. CNN’s Anderson Cooper reported live from Port-Au-Prince and described the looting as ‘frenzy on the street.’ He reported that there were young men were armed with knives, screwdrivers, and planks of wood that had nails driven into them as they fought for supplies. The looting took place in stores and the people grabbed as many items as they could get.
