The Prime Minister of Haiti says hundreds of thousands are dead and at least 100 United Nations workers are missing and unaccounted for. Of the nine million residents of Haiti, two million lived in the country’s capital city: Port-au-Prince. Port-au-Prince was utterly destroyed by the 7.0 earthquake that struck yesterday at 5:00 p.m. ET.

As nations worldwide seek to provide rescue teams into Haiti, those who were in the country providing charitable and relief services at the time of the earthquake are in need of rescuing themselves. Doctors without Borders have reported that approximately eight hundred of their staff is missing and unaccounted for. Though millions may be in need of medical attention, Doctors without Borders has also stated that none of their medical facilities are operable.

The main prison in Haiti has been destroyed sending hundreds of inmates fleeing into the streets and to their escape. Early reports suggest that the airport has not been significantly damaged and may be crucial for recovery efforts.
President Obama spoke earlier today and pledged a full scale relief effort. Many in the United States are seeking information on family members, friends, and loved ones. There is a hotline established at the State Department for those with family members in Haiti. The number is 1-888-407-4747.
