One week after the failed Flight 253 terrorist attack attempted by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, President Obama announced that the attack has been linked to al Qaeda. The president has reviewed reports and spoken with his homeland security and counterterrorism advisories and addressed the nation regarding the findings.

In his weekly address, President Obama stated, “We know that he [Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab] traveled to Yemen, a country grappling with crushing poverty and deadly insurgencies. It appears that he joined an affiliate of al Qaeda and that this group, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, trained him, equipped with those explosives and directed him to attack that plane headed for America.

This is not the first time this group has targeted us. In recent years, they've bombed Yemeni government facilities and western hotels, restaurants and embassies, including our embassy in 2008, killing one American.”

In response to the attack and recent reports, President Obama has scheduled a meeting with his homeland security advisors and team on Tuesday, January 5, 2009.

In other news regarding Abdul mutallab (Abdul Mutallab), CNN reports that their sources have shown a possible link between Abdulmutallab and radical Muslim cleric, Anwar al-Awlaki. Al-Awlaki was linked to Fort Hood shooter Malik Nidal Hasan as well as two of the 911 plotters. . A report by Newser states that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab told investigators that he was mentored by al-Awlaki and that he gave his blessing over the Flight 253 attempted terrorist attack.

The report was made by the Washington Times and states that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab also told officials that he had been indoctrinated by Anwar al-Awlaki.

President Obama stated that due to the attack, he is committed to strengthening our ties with the Yemeni government. He also said that those who participated in the Christmas Day attempted terrorist attack will be held accountable.
