President Obama loses popularity with voters (poll, video)

President Obama loses popularity with voters (poll, video)

According to a new poll by CNN and Opinion Research Corporation President Obama is losing popularity with voters and more than 50% of those polled feel that the President is doing a poor job, leaving 49 who approved of President Obama’s performance. The poll results come just one day before President Obama delivers his State of the Union Address.

A similar poll was conducted between November 13-15 2009, and at that time 55% of those polled approved of President Obama’s performance, so clearly his approval rating is slipping. When compared with his approval rating from February 7-8 2009 it is evident. The President’s approval rating then was at 76% percent. Many cite the lack of jobs and increase of unemployment for the declining trend. According to the poll, President Obama has dropped 27% in nearly a year.

The poll focused on different areas and asked citizens a number of specific questions. One question in particular asked whether citizens believed that President Obama had the right priorities in his administration or whether he was paying enough attention to the nation’s most important problems. Results for April 23-26 2009 showed that 63% believed he had the right priorities. The new poll saw that number drop to 45%.

One thousand and nine U.S. citizens (adults) were questioned by telephone between January 22 and January 24, 2010. There is an overall sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Although the General Approve/Disapprove slide is something that is hard to miss and is seen in more polls than the one mentioned here, there is another more telling statistic. That is, the comparison between Strongly Approving versus Strongly Disapproving. For those polls that measure that intensity, fewer people are "strongly" supportive, and that translates into erosion of truely strong support. Conversely, there is an increase in those "stongly" opposed to the President, and those who want to fight with his proposals. This started as a Polarization trend early on in his Andministration with more being "strongly" one way or the other as the days went on, while the general split was being more stable. Now, there is a general shift where the people with "strong" fellings are shifting more negative or less supportive more quickly than even the General Approve/Disapprove slide is showing. The White House needs to reinvent itself, or Obama will become a 3 year lame duck!
