President Obama live town hall in Tampa to announce high speed rail (watch live video, chat)

President Obama live town hall in Tampa to announce high speed rail (watch live video, chat)

President Obama arrived at MacDill Air Force base and will hold a town hall meeting in Tampa, Florida. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 1:05 p.m. ET. You can watch live coverage of the town hall meeting in the video player below.

President Obama will speak from the University of Tampa Bob Martinez Sports Center and is expected to announce that the Florida Department of Transportation will receive a 1,250,000,000 grant to build a high speed intercity passenger rail program. The high speed rail will take commuters from Tampa to Orlando and will consist of 84 miles of new track combined with 240 miles for a total of 324 miles. The grant comes directly from the American Recovery and Reinvestment ARRA or as President Obama referred to in his state of the union address last night, the recovery plan.

The grant for $1.25 billion is considerably less than what Florida had asked for as the state had applied for $2.6 billion. The high speed rail is expected to take over four years to complete and it is expected that nearly 600 permanent jobs may come from the new high speed rail, and approximately 23,000 temporary jobs could come during the high speed rail’s construction.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist has plans to meet with President Obama before he speaks.
