New thinner Barbie doll may fuel rising eating disorders in young women

The already thin Barbie, by Mattel, has "fat ankles," according to French designer Christian Louboutin. (AP Photo)

Designer Christian Louboutin thinks the already unrealistically thin Barbie doll's legs are too heavy and is redesigning a newer, thinner version due out in the states next year. This move may help to fuel the already rising incidence of eating disorders among women in the U.S. who strive to obtain impossibly thin figures.

The new Barbie will have even thinner legs because Louboutin found the doll’s “…ankles too fat,” according to the New York Daily News.

Louboutin is not the only designer to embrace stick-thin figures, as Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld announced recently “No one wants to see curvy women. You’ve got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly.”

Studies have determined that changes in eating disorder symptomatology and a drop in self-esteem in young women were related to model images in fashion magazines, according to researchers Irving, DuPen, and Berel.

In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this month that 25% of high school girls in America reported having eating disorders. The Daily News also reports that anorexia is now being obsreved in children as young as 4.

Some magazines have praised the zaftig looking model, such as Glamour magazine, who printed a photo of 180 pound Lizzie Miller in only her underwear—flaws and all. Although that photo received massive publicity, a quick peek at the magazine’s fashion pages today shows Glamour is still featuring models that are underweight when compared to the average American woman.

Louboutin’s newly designed, thinner Barbie doll is scheduled to be on toy store shelves in the U.S. in May 2010.

Have the spate of fashion designers who are currently pushing for thinner models - and barbies - not heard about the rise in eating disorders and the high fatality rate of anorexia? After suffering from chronic anorexia bulimia, I don't really understand what they're playing at....perhaps a look at the emotional and physical costs of being thin might encourage them to use their influence a little more responsibly...

I am an eating disorder expert and author of Not Your Mother's Diet. What I hope is that as mothers and grandmothers, you can model the behaviors you want to see in your young girls. Choose to be a woman who throws out your diet and learn balanced eating and true love for yourself as you are. This attitude and awareness of body acceptance will eventually transfer to your daughters. As women, we are all beautiful in our body differences.

Oh please... let's stop all this hype about eating disorders being caused by a desire to emulate a Barbie doll, a thin media image, and feeling pressured by these images. Eating disorders, but especially anorexia nervosa (which I am in recovery from) are biologically based disorders that are triggered by interpersonal factors or hormonal changes at puberty.

Many young women with anorexia nervosa say that they are 'triggered' by viewing thin bodies, but this occurs AFTER the onset of their eating disorder.
