Hurricane Bill has become the first hurricane of the 2009 season. Updated from a tropical storm to a hurricane early Monday morning, the center of Hurricane Bill was approximately 1160 miles to 1870 km east of the Lesser Antilles. The storm is moving quickly and is traveling west-northwest at speeds of approximately 22 mph/35 km per hour. It is estimated that this projected speed and path will continue for another 24 to 48 hours.
Maximum sustained winds associated with Hurricane Bill have reached nearly 75 mph/ 120 km per hour, it is expected that Hurricane Bill will continue to gain strength today and tomorrow, possibly becoming a major hurricane by Wednesday, August 19, 2009. Hurricane force winds extend from the center, outward to an area of 30 mile/ 45 km. Tropical force storm winds extend outwards to an area of 145 miles or 230 km.
