Presented each year by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globe Awards recognize and honor outstanding achievements in both television and motion pictures. The first Golden Globes were presented in January 1944.

Today, the awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical were announced. The Golden Globes will be held on January 17, 2010 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California and will air live on NBC at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The following actors were nominated for the 2010 Golden Globe Awards for the year ending on December 31, 2009.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical

Matt Damon- The Informant
Daniel Day-Lewis- Nine
Robert Downey Jr. - Sherlock Holmes
Joseph Gordon-Levitt- 500 Days Of Summer
Michael Stuhlbarg- A Serious Man

This is the first Golden Globe Awards nomination for both Michael Stuhlbarg and Joseph-Gordon-Levitt. This marks the fifth Golden Globe nomination for Robert Downey Jr. He has won the award twice, once for Best Supporting Actor (Ally McBeal) and for his role in Short Cuts.

This is the fourth nomination for Matt Damon, he won the Best Screenplay Golden Globe for Good Will Hunting.

This is the sixth nomination for Daniel Day-Lewis. He won the Best Actor Golden Globe for his role in There Will Be Blood.

Last year’s nominees for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy were Javier Bardem for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, James Franco for Pineapple Express, Brendan Gleeson for In Bruges, and Dustin Hoffman for Last Chance Harvey. Colin Farrell won the award last year for his role in In Bruges.
