Diane Sawyer, who now co-hosts ABC’s 'Good Morning America' with Robin Roberts, will be replacing Charles Gibson as the anchor for ABC’s 'World News' in Jan. 2010.

Gibson, 66, who has been a staple at ABC for over three decades, has been planning his retirement since 2007. He remained on board after the death of Peter Jennings and the injury of Bob Woodruff in 2006.

GMA has not announced who will replace Sawyer or what will happen with the show after Sawyer leaves. Gibson had been a regular on GMA as well, but took over ABC World News after Jennings died from cancer in 2005, and Bob Woodruff, who was co-hosting the news with Elizabeth Vargas, suffered a wartime injury. Vargas became pregnant, and Gibson was recruited to take over the anchor position.

Sawyer’s move will mean that along with CBS’s Katie Couric, two of the three main anchors for broadcast network news will be women.
