Developers of mosque near Ground Zero only own half the construction site, says report

The developers who want to build a mosque near Ground Zero in New York City, Soho Properties, only own half the site where construction is to take place, according to a recent report.

The New York Post has learned that Soho Properties does not own the entire parcel where the controversial proposed mosque would be built. Instead, Con Ed owns one of the two buildings on Park Place.

According to the report, Soho Properties owns 45-47 Park Place, while Con Ed owns 49-51 Park Place.

Sharif El-Gamal, the head of Soho Properties, told Con Ed in February that he wanted to “exercise the purchase option in his $33,000-a-year lease” of the second building, reports the Post.

Con Ed is now conducting an appraisal of the property to determine its value. It would then be up to El-Gamal to decide if he wants to pay the estimated $10 million to $20 million price tag for the building.

One of the mosque’s organizers, Daisy Khan, told the Post that both buildings are needed to build the mosque and an adjoining cultural center. She also noted she did not know that Con Ed owned one of the buildings that is needed for the house of worship.

Rep. Peter King, who opposes the building of a mosque so close to Ground Zero, said the developers appear to be “operating under false pretenses.”

The Post reports that the mosque’s Web site notes that the project will be funded using a combination of financing, contributions, and equity. However, Ameena Meer, head of Muslims for Peace said only $200 in donations has been received.

I think they have the freedom to build the mosque there but they shouldn't do it. This article makes the point well.

The mosque is simply a monument to an Islamic military victory...typical for centuries of this militant-religous cult.
