A couple from South Texas has been charged with abuse of a corpse after placing an aborted 7-month old fetus in a gift box and placing it under a Christmas tree, authorities report.
The couple, Ruby Lee Medina, 31, and her boyfriend, Javier Gonzalez, 37, stood before a judge where their bond was set at $20,000. The couple lives in San Juan, Texas and police believe that Medina used pills to induce delivery then tried unsuccessfully to flush the fetus down the toilet.
The San Juan Police Department states that they were tipped off to the fetus’ whereabouts by an anonymous caller. Apparently, after Medina expelled the fetus, she went to a hospital due to excessive bleeding. Authorities grew concerned after she stated that she didn’t know where the fetus was. San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez stated that an autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death. Should it be determined that the baby was alive at the time of birth, capital murder charges may be filed against the couple.
Authorities described the couple as cooperative and have said that they voluntarily surrendered to authorities at the time of the arrest.
Sources have suggested to authorities that this is not the first time the couple has induced an abortion or disposed of a fetus. Investigators are looking into the allegations to determine if there are additional victims.
