Chile earthquake: Video shows Tsunami hit Chilean village, death toll nears 800 (photos, videos)

Amateur videographers captured raw video footage on Saturday morning after three tsunami waves swept across Chilean villages following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that ripped through the land. It is believed that eight people died during the tsunami but officials state that fifty are still unaccounted for.

The area of Dichato was a small fishing community, now it’s shores are dotted with piled up boats, crumbled houses, and broken debris. In the video, the roof of a home can be seen floating in the water. Waves of heights reaching 15’ swept the land shortly after the 3:00 a.m. quake.

As the full damage of the earthquake is realized, many in Chile are dealing with aftershocks. Many of the aftershocks have been light. Immediately following the earthquake, several aftershocks measured between 5.0 and 6.9 magnitude. Due to the aftershocks, many Chilean locals feel the buildings are unsafe and refuse to enter certain buildings. Though curfews are in place, some choose to sleep in vehicles rather than endure another quake.

The search for survivors continues, however, many are losing hope that their loved ones may not have survived for five days following the earthquake. Some may look to those in Haiti and take refuge as stories of survival emerged where survivors were found two-weeks following the earthquake.
Currently, the death toll is at 799, nearing 800. That number is expected to rise.
