Chile earthquake death toll tops 700, still rising (slideshow, photos, pictures, videos)
An 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck child has left more than 700 people dead, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said in a media interview today. Calling the disaster a state of catastrophe it has been determined that more than 1.5 million residents have been affected and more than 500,000 homes have been severely damaged or destroyed. The 8.8 earthquake proves to be one of the most devastating quakes ever recorded.
Recovery efforts are underway and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet described the damage as “a catastrophe of such unthinkable magnitude that it will require a giant effort to recover.” President Bachelet also declared that public meetings and gatherings will be canceled for the next 72 hours. Those in Chile whose homes remain structurally sound are required to stay indoors. There has been a great deal of looting following the quake, as well.
Communications are still sketchy in many areas and some smaller villages are without power. There have been more than ninety aftershocks recorded since yesterday’s early morning earthquake. Some of the aftershocks have contributed to the damage. The aftershocks have measured between 4.9 and 6.9 in magnitude.
When speaking about the casualties, President Michelle Bachelet said that she expects the death toll to rise.”
