Emergency officials told Reuters there is currently no risk of a tsunami, however, residents of the south-central town of Concepcion fled to higher ground in fear.
The initial temblor resulted in 802 deaths, according to a recent government count. Nonetheless, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet fears that number may continue to rise as time passes.
NASA believes that Saturday’s Chilean earthquake may have moved the earth off its axis by about 3 inches, which would serve to shorten each day by approximately 1.26 microseconds, due to the earth rotating faster than it had prior to the temblor.
