The body of Kentucky Census worker Bill Sparkman was discovered on September 12, 2009 hanging in
the Daniel Boone National Forest. Sources say that the word ‘fed’ was carved or scrawled into his chest, causing the FBI to investigate whether or not he was murdered for anti-government purposes. Update, as of September 25, 2009, the Clay County Coroner stated that the word 'fed' was written on his chest with a felt tip pen.
Authorities have stated that the cause of death is asphyxiation, but haven’t revealed much information regarding how the body was discovered.
Sources have reported that Bill Sparkman was found hanging. A statement released yesterday says that Sparkman was found with a rope around his neck and he was tied to a tree, however, his feet were in contact with the ground. According to the statement, he was not found hanging in the typical sense. Another fact that has yet to be confirmed is whether or not Sparkman was performing Census related duties at the time of death (which is believed to have occurred on September 11, 2009).
A full autopsy is being performed. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear released a statement regarding the death of the U.S. Census worker. It reads, “The Medical Examiner's office is awaiting test results to determine cause of death, and once a cause and manner have been established, state police will focus their investigation in the appropriate direction.”
Bill Sparkman was 51 years old, a teacher, and worked part time as a Census worker. If it is verified that he was performing a federal task at the time of death and was murdered, his death would be considered a federal crime. The area where Sparkman had entered is known for criminal activity. An associate and fellow teacher stated, “Even though he was with the Census Bureau, sometimes people can view someone with any government agency as 'the government.' I just was afraid that he might meet the wrong character along the way up there.” Investigators are still working to determine whether Bill Sparkman died accidentally, was murdered, or committed suicide.
