Brittany Murphy’s death caused by drugs and pneumonia, according to coroner

Thirty-two-year-old Brittany Murphy died unexpectedly on the morning of Dec. 20 after collapsing in the bathroom of her Hollywood Hills home. On Thursday, the coroner announced her death was due to a combination of anemia, pneumonia, and prescription drugs.

Thus, the actress’ death was ruled an accident and was preventable if Murphy had seen a doctor for her ailments, according to Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter. The Morning Journal reports that Winter also noted that Murphy had scheduled a doctor’s appointment prior to her death, but died days before.

According to the report, the strain of pneumonia acquired by Murphy was lethal when combined with an iron deficiency and certain prescription drugs.

Renowned forensics expert, Dr. Michael Baden, said “One doesn’t die of pneumonia, usually, that quickly… It sounds more like it’s a drug-related than a natural pulmonary pneumonia.”

In January, Murphy's husband Simon Monjack confirmed to the Associated Press that his wife was taking prescription drugs, including an anti-seizure medication. Monjack has also publicly stated that Murphy did not suffer from an eating disorder and did not abuse the prescribed drugs she was taking.
