Mayor of Boston Thomas Menino, right and Tom Ridge, President and CEO of Ridge Global LLC , shake hands. Menino has called Justin Barrett, the officer who made a racial slur in an email referring to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., a 'cancer.' (AP)
After officials discovered a Boston police officer had used a racial slur when referring to Harvard professor, Henry Louis Gates Jr., the officer was relieved of his weapon and badge and placed on administrative leave.
Elaine Driscoll, a spokesperson for Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis, said he “has placed Officer Justin Barrett on administrative leave pending outcome of a termination hearing. Commissioner Davis was made aware that this officer admitted to being the author of correspondence which included racial remarks.”
It is unknown how many people received the email from Barrett, which referred to Gates as a “jungle monkey.”
Boston Mayor Tom Menino called Barrett a “cancer in the department” and said his office said he should be fired immediately.
Officials are currently investigating the matter.

If the shoe fits. . .
....you're wearing it????
I believe this officer should be fired - immediately for his racist comment. The officer says he didn't mean it in a racist manner but how else can it be viewed. Jungle Monkey (when directed to a black person) can only be used derogatorily. He is a racist.
Racist. that is what he is unfortunately. He should be fired. He was just speaking what he feels and because of that - there is no place on the police department for a person with that idealogy (when you use certain words to refer to a particular race) What other names does he used when he is passionate about an issue or when making an arrest of a latino, asian, or any other minority?
When will Gates be fired for HIS racist remarks?
Got something to say?
