In this undated photo provided by the Web site saharareporters.com and verified by an Associated Press reporter present at the subject's arraignment, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is shown. Abdulmutallab, who claimed ties to al-Qaeda, was charged Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009 with trying to destroy a Detroit-bound airliner, just a month after his father warned U.S. officials of concerns about his son's religious beliefs. Twenty-three-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the son of prominent former banker, is charged with attempting to blow up flight 253 in Detroit on Christmas Day. The incident has raised serious questions about airport security internationally and airline passenger safety.

Authorities have determined that he likely snuck into Nigeria on Dec. 24 and left on a flight the same day. Abdulmutallab took a KLM flight to Amsterdam and then went through transit at Schiphol airport. Nigerian Information Minister Dora Akunyili said he had been living outside Nigeria for quite some time.
U.S. officials maintained information on Abdulmutallab as a suspected international terrorist, however, did not have enough data to place him on a “no fly” list.
Reuters reports that his U.S. visa was issued in London in 2008. The head of Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority, Harold Demuren, told Reuters that Abdulmutallab’s passport was scanned at Nigeria’s Lagos airport without the use of the Advance Passenger Information System.
“Thereafter, he passed through aviation security comprising a walk-through metal detector and baggage x-ray screening machine. He proceeded to the boarding gate where he went through secondary screening as confirmed by KLM officials,” said Demuren.
Akunyili said Nigeria passed audits of its airports by two transportaion organizations just last month. "We want to assure everybody that our airports are very safe," she said. "However, in the light of the new developments, we have reinforced our security systems in all our airports."
