During an interview with Access Hollywood, Adam Lambert said that his shocking sexual display was due to the lyrics of the song and that its intent was in ‘getting laid.’ When told that he knew not everyone around the country could handle his AMA performance he said that he was hoping that they wouldn’t be able to handle it. When describing the offense to some of his fans and viewers he described it as being ‘apples and oranges’ and said that as an artist he wouldn’t appeal to everyone indicating that he might not be the best artist for all listeners. When discussing the lyrics and musical integrity of the song, Adam Lambert said that he believes in artistic freedom and expression, and honoring the lyrics of a song. The lyrics to For Your Entertainment include phrases such as ‘Push the Limit’ ‘Let’s go, It’s my show’ ‘I bet you thought that I was soft and sweet, well I’m about to turn up the heat.’ From Adam Lambert’s own words, his performance was interpreting the lyrics of the song. He said, “Those lyrics aren’t for everybody either.”
Adam Lambert responded to the comment that the AMA performance would be edited by saying that if it’s edited he will be disappointed and that it would be discrimination and that there is a double standard between men and women when they push the envelope. He described the performance as shockrock and spoke about earlier shockrockers, such as David Bowie and Prince.
He stated that each song has a different energy and that when he performs; he is true to the energy of the song. For Your Entertainment was about going to the club and getting laid.
