7.0 Haiti earthquake leaves country in ruins

7.0 Haiti earthquake leaves country in ruins

A little after 5:00 p.m. ET, on January 12, 2010 a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, leaving a wake of panic, dread, and destruction. The capital city of Port-au-Prince has all but been destroyed and the American Red Cross has reported that approximately three million people have been affected by the earthquake. Following the catastrophic quake has been a series of devastating aftershocks; at least 28 had struck by Tuesday morning. The United Nations mission has also been destroyed.

The earthquake took out communications and landline telephones and the sound of devastation can be heard throughout the cities. The sound of cries, wails, and moans were heard echoing above the cracked cement and broken buildings. Rescue efforts are underway but have been hindered due to the lack of communications. The earthquake has been deemed to be the worst in over 200 years. Rescue workers are searching for entry passage as many of the roads have been devastated. It is still too early to count all the dead.

Now that the sun has arisen upon Haiti, assessments of the damage are underway. With a population of nine million people, two million live in Port-au-Prince, but the earthquakes catastrophic events were not limited to Port-au-Prince alone. Meanwhile, the United States Coast Guard is assessing the damage from an aerial view to determine the best route for recovery efforts. The United Nations head of missions in Haiti is missing among the rubble and more than 100 United Nation’s workers are missing.

More than 800 workers for Doctors without Borders are also missing. The current estimate says that ‘hundreds of thousands’ are deceased as rescue workers race against time to save those trapped under the rubble.

@allahsaveusall: are you serious?? you can't blaim God on this, He is not responsible for the deaths, also He is not responsible for the 'miraculous' salvation of the survivors. It's a BIG sh*.t that happens. If you believe in God you'll know that revenge is NOT part of His 'nature'. Be reasonable.

I'd like to remind you religious people that an earthquake is an "Act of God," so appreciate it for god sakes. Haiti is one of the most atrocious, crime ridden and anti "god" nations in the world. Their national religion is Vodoo. Haiti is worse than Sodom or Gomorrah. Too bad that god didn't level the whole country. Maybe god is just sending a warning . . .

How can you say that an earthquake is an act of god? Haiti sits on a fault line. Its most devastating earthquake occured as a 8.0 in 1770 when the French occupied the land. Why was God punishing the French huh!? He wasn't. Haiti sits on a fault line. Every 200 years there will be a brutal earthquake regardless of who occupies the land. Things happen for scientific reasons. Take off your blindfold and get used to it.

There is bad people commenting on this article, you are afraid of suffering this, so you want to think you don't desserve it, and Haiti does... so wrong. They are in an awfull moment and we have to help. It could happen every where, and it will, it seems like a earthquake storm on the earth, you will see it close to you.

How truly sick do you have to be to believe that this was an act of God?. These people did nothing to deserve loosing an unbelievable amount of family members and friends. I cannot wrap my mind around the fact that there are people SO ignorant and close minded to believe that these people "Got what they deserved", you have to be a truly disgusting, miserable, STUPID person.

the ones who are saying that this is an act of God then I may tell you to read your bible a few times before you say that God is a God of destruction! Remember that the devil is actually their God there and that he only brings suffering, destruccion, pain..etc etc..Dont you dare to say that it is God who did this because believe you will be the one who will be punished for the words that came out of your mouth because you filth his name with things he would not do to there childeren! And I repeat to you to read your bible because in it God warns us of what can happen when your not with him but with the devil!! Dont be such a hypocrats trying to make people think that you know what your saying! Because you dont even now where your standing!!

response to Tee: Im not sayin that ur wrong or that im rite but the Bible does say that ur life wont be perfect u will go through trials and tribulations, that is one of the ultimate tests of faith. or maybe God was trying to save them and letting them know that many worse things will happen when the end of days come.

May I remind you, that yes, haiti sits in 2 tectonic plates & has a fault line bracketing the island... thus causing Haiti to have earthquakes every now and then. but who do you think put Haiti on those tectonic plates & faultlines? GOD DID! so get your head out of your ass & think before you comment you little twit.
this was clearly an act of God, he put Haiti on the fault line so that it would get earthquakes & what not.
    So shut your trap! :@
