While 2009 might have belonged to Taylor Swift and Susan Boyle, Michael Jackson has officially earned the distinction of being the year's top earning album and ringtone music star !
The just tabulated honor comes from Billboard's recently revealed 'Money Makers' list which pits Jackson as earning $13.2 million in albums sales last year. But, that's not all. Sources say the icon pulled in $255,000 in ringtones and managed to rake in a sum of over $17.3 million !
A comprehensive report card of sorts, Billboard's "Money Makers" list is based on an artist's share of revenue as opposed to total dollars generated by each artist in the ranking. Data compiled from Billboard Boxscore, Nielsen BDS, Nielsen RingScan, and Nielsen Soundscan was used in determining 2009's top earners through January 3, 2010.
Beyonce ($23.6 million +), Britney Spears ($38 million+), Lil Wayne ($12.8 million) and Tina Turner ($13.1) also made the list. However, it was U2 that claimed the top spot earning over $108 million in 2009 !
