Urban chickens being all the rage, artistic license is being taken with respect to the housing in which people keep their feathered friends. Many want to share their creations and others are curious what coops might be like.
Coop tours are a fun event you'll see all over the country, and CityChooks in Lawrence will be putting together Lawrence's First Annual Feathernutter Kitschy Coop tour late this coming Spring. If you know someone with delightful digs for their birds drop in on the CityChooks FaceBook page and submit the Lawrence owner's contact information. Submissions will be accepted now through February.
Coop tours allow chicken owners and fans alike a chance to see the creative side of a chicken condo. Themed after anything the owner takes a fancy to, you'll see Easter Island, Asia, auto and Olde English in the coops around town. All over the internet you'll see fantastic designs and ornamentation, including copper roofs and mahogany trim.
Other coop tours you'll find are hosted in Austin, Portland, Seattle, Tucson, Spokane, Atlanta...on and on. Many of these tours post web photos of the most flamboyant and functional, often inspirational for those scoping out designs for their own forays into the addictive hobby of chicken ownership. A self-guided tour is a great way to see how others care for their chooks, whether you've had a flock for years or even for those just toying with the idea of starting their egg-fruit orchard. It's definitely a great way to spend a day, and often there are gardens and water-features to observe, as well. It's an obvious opportunity to meet the local chicken-keeping community and share ideas or ask questions on a lovely day around town!
