Fujiya happy hour hits the mark in authenticity

On an inconspicuous half-corner, with a modern, Tokyo-influenced sign, Fujiya may not look like much, but definitely delivers in the form of service and spirits.  Entering, the bright red walls and smiles of the hosts immediately grab your attention, and the vibrant, full sushi bar calls to you like a siren, its sushi-themed clock pointing at the tuna, making it known exactly what time it really is.  For truly thirsty individuals, the high bar near the shaded windows brings excitement and, most importantly, a great selection.

Fujiya, boasting two locations, one of which is right off Lake Street and Lyndale in Uptown, delivers an authentic Japanese happy hour Tuesday through Thursday 5-7 pm and 10 pm to midnight, with Sundays' going from 8-10 pm.  The beauty of these magical two hours brings extremely cheap sushi, sashimi, and appetizers, as well as legitimately good ole beer and sake from the mother-country, for only $3.50 and $4.50, respectively.

The selection?  For beer, Fujiya imports Asahi, Kirin, Tsing Tao, and, one of the classics, Sapporo.  The latter, meaning "important river flowing through a plain" in Ainu, does just that -- the dry plains of your mouth will be quenched with flavor by this irreplaceable and mighty river of a beverage.  Not to bore serious drinkers with a history lesson, the sake selection for happy hour consists of Ki Ippon, a pure rice sake with light flavors that make it perfect for fish-pairing.

Luckily for the public, Fujiya's bar not only carries beer and sake, but for the winos, every Thursday from 9 pm until close you can order half-priced wine bottles in their lounge.  With attentive staff, you'll always feel at home here, even if fish does make you squirm.
