Wolf Oak Acres in Oneida, NY
Autumn in the Northeast is a fabulous time of year. Clear blue skies during the day, a starry blanket overhead at night. It's a time when we cover the pool until next year, put away the lawn chairs, and begin taking in the last of the tomatoes and squash. The farm stands begin offering tempting, crisp apples and cider. And the kids begin thinking about their Halloween costumes. It's probably more fun than Christmas.
When our kids were small, we had a fun Halloween/harvest season place to visit called Cackleberry Castle. There wasn't much to it a giant talking pumpkin, the voice being one of the owners' family members watching from inside the old farm house as kids approached; a tractor ride out to the pumpkin patch; and some concessions of cider, hot chocolate and little treats. One thing the kids loved was that they could go after dark and see all the pumpkin totems lining the huge farmhouse yard, all lit with Christmas lights. A visit to a pumpkin farm during the day just never was the same as Cackleberry Castle.
But now, in Oneida, New York, we have Wolf Oak Acres, being called the hottest new agritourism venture in Madison County. It sports 150 acres and a plethora of activities like pig races, gem stone mining, sling shots, corn cannons, corn maze, flashlight maze, hay maze, wagon rides, corn crib, pedal karts, wagon rides, steer roping, pumpins, indian corn, gourds, corn stalks and more.
The best thing is that during the month of October, Wolf Oak Acres is open after dark, until 10 pm, on Friday and Saturday nights.
