Earth Day may have been this past Wednesday, but the eco-friendly clothing trend is an ongoing and ever-expanding phenomenon. Tumbler & Tipsy takes the concept of recycling a step further by creating novel fashion from pre-existing wardrobes.
Started by former figure skater, Michael Kuluva, this new green line takes vintage clothing as well as fabrics and reconstructs them into distinctive pieces. Although other reconstructed clothing lines already exist, the fashion connoisseur in Kuluva found those companies didn’t fit his needs. “None of them were really doing what I was looking for,” the L.A. designer explains on his company’s Web site. “I like the classy style that you can dress up, dress down, mix with other items, and not be restricted to one style.”
Just check out the bold shouldered look on the line’s cropped, tweed-inspired button front jacket. Girls aren’t the only ones with great repurposed options. Guys can make a plaid statement in a rugged button-up shirt complete with the collection’s logo, “Too many tumblers of whiskey might make you a bit tipsy!” emblazoned on the back. The line offers a growing selection of blouses, dress shirts, vests and blazers.
Kuluva demonstrates his resourcefulness as well as innovation by cutting, stitching and assembling pieces by hand sans even the assistance of a sewing machine. “I never buy two of the same garment, so you’ll never see the same embellishment,” he says.
The whole refashioned clothing movement may take awhile to go mainstream, but it’s a fun way to love the planet and sport some unique style.
