Happy birthday, Mark Twain

Samuel Clemens was born November 30, 1835, the year Halley's Comet crossed the sky.

Writings and History
According to Lesson Planet, the writings of Mark Twain (a.k.a. Samuel Langhorne Clemens) remain required reading for many students. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876 ) and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), tell the tales of free-ranging, playful, and carefree boys.

Clemens studied 2,000 miles of the Mississippi River in order to receive a steamboat pilot license. The river itself played a central role in many of his stories.

Clemens' use of humor in his writing had a significant affect on literature and inspired The Mark Twain Prize for Humor.

Clemens had a close friendship with scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla. Clemens, himself, patented three inventions: self-adhesive scrapbook pages, a history trivia game, and a replacement for clothing suspenders.

Popular Quotes on Education
"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education."

Education consists mainly in what we have unlearned.--Mark Twain's Notebook, 1898

Homeschoolers and unschoolers often repeat the first quote above. However, some people question its authenticity or attribution to Mark Twain.
