Mozart's most famous opera: The Magic Flute will performed at UNLV's Judy Bayley Theatre, beginning Friday, March 19th at 7:30 PM. It is the first of three performances which will be held.

The next one will be Saturday (also beginning at 7:30 PM) and the last one will be on Sunday, March 21st at 2:00PM and will last until 4:30.

This special performance will be conducted by Taras Krysa, a former violinist for The Moscow Conservatory and now currently Director of Orchestras at UNLV.

The Magic Flute (or as it is called in German: Die Zauberflöte) was composed in 1791 and was considered a Singspiel, which is an opera style that includes spoken dialogue as well as the standard singing.

As well as music, this opera also contains a libretto (text in an extended opera) written in German by Emanuel Schickaneder, who, oddly enough played the role of Papageno in the very first performance of this opera. Mozart not only composed it, but he also conducted it.

The opera was a success, despite it going against traditional opera norms.

Traditionally, operas during that period were written in Italian and could only be understood by the upper class.

The Magic Flute has two acts and is about a guy named Tamino, who receives a magic flute as s gift from some ladies and must use it during his adventures.

Sadly, Mozart passed away before The Magic Flute could celebrate its 100th performance, which was in November of 1792.

This performance is presented by UNLV's Music Department.

Tickets are $25, but Military, Senior, and UNLV Faculty and Staff Discounts make it only $15. Students can get them for $5, each.
