Earlier this week The University of Michigan Press unveiled what it's calling "one of the shortest marketing campaigns in the history of new books." #NewBooksIn5Words is a Twitter hashtag that, working side-by-side with highly condensed previews, fits well under the social media site's 140-character limit, and which is being used to give those who follow or check out the @UofM Press feed a brief, curiosity-piquing glimpse of just-issued scholarly and trade titles.
According to its Trade Marketing Manager, Heather Newman, UM Press has a good following on Twitter, "But there's no way to thoroughly summarize a great book in 140 characters," adding "So we're not going to try. Instead, we'll give readers the pithy, sometimes quirky-funny headline and encourage them to find out more."
A recent example: "Great Lakes in winter: brrrrr," an enticement for The Windward Shore: A Winter on the Great Lakes by Jerry Dennis, as well as "Smart robots - are they people?" to spur interest in A Legal Theory for Autonomous Artifical Agents from Samir Chopra and Laurence F. White.
