Brought together by new technology, a group of young United Methodist ministers are reaching out to the rest of the church through that same technology.
The United Methodist Young Clergy Network formed out of a group of young clergy members who met largely through social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and various blogs. Now, the group has a website, recently revamped, to help young clergy throughout the church interact in person as well as through online venues.
In conjunction with the new website, the Young Clergy Network is sponsoring a 40-day prayer campaign in support of the growth of the United Methodist Church. The campaign started on May 18th. To participate in the prayer campaign, visit the Young Clergy Network website at www.umcyoungclergy.com and click on "prayer." You can then subscribe to the RSS feed to join the campaign. The website also provides information for following the campaign on Twitter, using the #pray40 hashtag, and other information about the organization.
The Young Clergy Network is also making use of new publishing technology to make their prayer book, 40 Days of Prayer for the United Methodist Church, available for anyone who wishes to participate. The book is published through lulu.com, a publishing venue which allows for almost instant publication of books in paperback, hardback, and electronic form. 40 Days of Prayer is available through Lulu in both paperback and electronic download (.pdf) form. The material in the book was written by forty different members of the Young Clergy Network. All profits from sales of the book go to NothingButNets.net, an organization that supplies mosquito netting and other important supplies to help stop the spread of malaria in various areas of the world.
The 40 Days of Prayer campaign is an innovative program, bringing people together through the medium of social networking to help support the worldwide church. It's the hope of the Young Clergy Network to help strengthen the church and clarify its overall purpose, using the power of new media to enable all of the church to grow closer together.
