Minimum wage increases: Get what you deserve (NY)

If you receive a minimum wage salary, be sure to check your most recent paycheck to ensure that your employer is following the most current state laws. The State recently announced that it has recovered over $10 million that are due to its workers.  As of July 24, 2009, minimum wage has been increased 10 cents (admittedly not enough, but anything helps).

So, if your salary lists anything lower than $7.25/hr, take note.  I should mention that if you receive additional work compensation (lodging, etc.), this minimum salary can be different for you, so take a look at the Fair Labor Standards Act (click here for an overview).

According to the NYS department of Labor, “Random sweeps are conducted in industries that traditionally employ immigrants and low-wage workers to ensure they are being paid properly”; however, if your employer is not giving you what you deserve, call the number below to notify someone immediately:

The State Labor Department has bilingual investigators throughout the state who are able to aid employers or workers with issues relating to compliance with New York’s labor laws. To file a complaint, or to ask questions, please call 1-888-52-LABOR.
