The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced yesterday that the national unemployment rate fell to 9.7% in January. http://bit.ly/boKX8Q. Unemployment statistics for Indiana and other states should be released later in February. The unemployment rate for Marion County was just over 9% in December. President Obama stated that the drop in unemployment rate was “cause for hope but no celebration.”
Nevertheless, the economy lost 20,000 jobs nationwide. The number of discouraged workers -- people who have stopped looking for jobs in the past 4 weeks - grew from 840,000 to 1.1 million nationwide. Since the start of the recession, the U.S. has lost 8.4 millions jobs. The BLS reported that employment decreased in the construction, transportation and warehousing industries.
