“Administration officials said that even if Congress quickly approved the program, it would not produce jobs until sometime next year. That means the proposal's only pre-election impact may be a political one as the White House tries to demonstrate to voters that it is working to boost the economy and create jobs.” This comment came from a story located at www. thecalifornian.com, by the associated press dated September 7th, 2010. Political move or not, it sounds good for many unemployed people in the Chicago area. The only bad thing is that these stimulus jobs won’t happen until next year, and many people’s bills are not going to wait until then.
President Obama spoke the truth in the article when he said: “Now here's the honest truth, the plain truth. There's no silver bullet, there's no quick fix to these problems," he said, adding that it will take time to "reverse the damage of a decade worth of policies that caused the recession.” With no silver bullet, the questions are if these proposed jobs will actually pay enough to get people back on their feet, and also if the openings will be temporary much like Census 2010, or will some or all positions be permanent in nature?
The buzz in the south side community of Bronzeville has not been one that seems annoyed with the Democrats playing on the unemployed for political gains when jobs were the subject. “It’s about time”, was heard more often than not, in a survey sampling outside Jewel Foods in the Lake Meadows shopping center. “It’s a good thing,” was the second most popular response. Let’s just hope that it remains a good thing that is right on time to alleviate the unemployment hemorrhage that has plagued minority communities for a longer time, and with more casualties to show for declining economic growth in America. Stay strong. Take care.
