The Pavilion from the 2008 Flint Rockfest
One of the coolest events to take the kids happens every August in Flint. The Fourth Annual Flint Rock Fest will take place in Kearsley Park and is a highlight of the summer music season. This festival has been the passion of Reckless Entertainment promoter Colleen Radford from the beginning. Her goal was to showcase local metal talent in a family friendly environment.
Come rain or come shine, you will see some of the most popular metal and rock bands in the Tri-County area. It is on August 1st, and it is an all ages/all day event. Admission is free. The music begins in the pavilion at 12:00 pm and the head banging doesn’t stop until 9:30 p.m. However, the music doesn’t stop at the park. There are five more bands playing an after party at the Corunna Road Bar after the festival. It is 21 or over for the after party.
Because Kearsley Park is part of the Flint Parks and Recreation department, it is a “non alcohol” event. No alcohol will be served and no alcohol is allowed in the park. All of the bands will have their own signing area and will have merchandise available. It allows fans to talk one on one with their favorite local metal band. There is a playground right next to the pavilion for the kids. There are food vendors available. Kearsley Park is still a public park and having a picnic is allowed. Activities include face painting for the kids and a bike run for Cherokee’s Journey Home Foundation.
The year’s schedule includes Reverend Right Time, Free Will, Sour Jane, Last Warning, Mothra, It Lies Within, Given Six, Ruins of Tomorrow, Publik Parking, Convergence Theory, Lithium, Wake of Destruction, and B.C. Smith and the Willie Williams Infestation. The after party at the Corunna Road Bar will showcase bands like Episodic, Chrome Mollie, The Round, Pound Drive, and Silver Spork.
So, pack your beach chairs, and head up north I-75 towards Flint to one of the last all free rock festivals in Michigan. Kearsley Park is located on Decker Street in Flint. Check out www.flintrockfest.com for more details including directions, schedule times, sponsors, and events.
