Louisville, Colorado pastry chef Nicole Hedlund took to the streets in support of what she calls the "real fruitcake". According to her, the stigma against the fruitcake has gotten so bad that she can't even get people to try her free samples.
But the fruitcakes Hedlund has made for Grande Finale bakery are good, aged in brandy, with lots of high quality dried fruit - no flourescent green cherries, here.
She said most fruitcake makers go wrong by making the baked good too heavy or two sweet, primarily due to soaking it in syrup rather than liquor.
Her fruitcake, however, she's sure people would love it if they just gave it a chance.
We took one of her fruitcakes and handed samples around the office. Those who had tob e coaxed in general said something along the lines of, "This isn't as bad as I thought it would be." Those open minded enough to have tried a fruitcake or two in their lives, however, found it to be the best fruitcake they'd ever had.
So, she's right. Try it, and you might like it.

Comments
YES! Fruitcake has gotten such a bad rap due to poorly made fruitcakes with inferior ingredients being palmed of on people desperately in need of gifts. REAL fruitcake is delicious, not too sweet, not too heavy, fruity tasting with a warm, "comfort-food" aftertaste.
