Scientists say that an ingredient in soy sauce could be a cure for cancer.
It's well known that in societies where the cuisine uses a lot of soy sauce there are fewer cases of certain types of cancer. And now scientists say that they've found out the reason why. There are certain fatty substances in soy sauce called "sphingadienes" and these seem to kill certain types of cancer cell.
Natural molecules, called sphingadienes (SDs), can trigger the death of certain cells, scientists have found.
However, this isn't going to be a cure for cancer next week: much more study will have to be done on quite how they work and how to make the best method of getting them into the human body. In the meantime, a diet rich in soy sauce might be advisable:
"I would be comfortable recommending soy products as a change in the diet that could protect against cancer," Dr Saba added.
"The more that soy is studied, the more of these protective agents are found, so it's a very healthy diet choice."

I wouldnt be cracking open the soy sauce bottle yet.
Soy sauce is also extremely high in an ingredient that causes stomach cancer. That ingredient is salt. Soy sauce is seven times as salty as seawater - so even if you only use teaspoon amounts, soy sauce can end up adding a lot of salt to the diet.
