Susan Boyle: number one on both sides of the Atlantic

Susan Boyle has the number one album in both the US and the UK. This is the second best debut for a female artist since records began in 1991.

Susan Boyle, the Britain's Got Talent competitor has seen her debut album climb to the top of the charts in both the UK and the US. She's thus amongst the biggest stars of the music business, alongside the Stones, Rod Stewart, The Beatles and the like.

Sales in both countries were outstanding:

The Britain's Got Talent sensation now has the top spot on both sides of the Atlantic with her debut release, "I Dreamed a Dream".

She sold 701,000 copies in America so far, beating new releases by Adam Lambert and Rihanna and becoming the best-selling debut of 2009.

That's not bad for a spinster lady from a small village in Scotland.

And while of course we do with her all the best and congratulate her on her achievement, does it have to be that this happy story makes Simon Cowell even richer?

Susan Boyle's album is the best debut ever for a female artist, not the second best. Susan does, however, have the second best debut since the counting of music sales began in 1991. She is indeed in great company, so please stop calling her a "spinster lady." If anything, Susan, with her personality and talent, has become a fine catch; maybe "eligible bachelorette" might be a better term?

Why can't you critics just say something nice for a change and leave it at that? First, you can't stand the fact that someone other than a "pop tart" with no talent hits the big-time. Then when it happens and you are forced to realize there is a large group of us who love her and buy her music you feel the need to somehow bring her down by complaining about Simon. Jealous, perhaps?

It annoys me so much when people use the word "spinster." It's so sexist.
Also everyone talks about Susan's age, but no one mentions the age of male stars.

I love Susan's album and listen to it every day. I can't wait for her next one.

Please, p l e a s e, PLEASE! Stop the 'spinster' references. We don't include in every article about male singers references to their marital status. And this one's archaic and borders on being a pejorative.

Good point about the age. Yes, she's starting a lot older than others, but she's 4 years younger than Madonna and is still young enough to be a member of U2. That's her generation.

Hey Tim. I just wanted to let you know that ABC's World News Now just aired a segment about Susan Boyle and showed THIS article on their news cast. Big congratulations! It was a quick thing, but quite recognizable.

    Nice work.

With "spinster". In English English (I am originally from there) this has more to it than just "never married". It also has the connotation of "never kissed" (and of course the further connotation of never second, third or home base). And as Susan Boyle has used this description of herself I think it's fair to use it.
