Steven Tyler's back in rehab

Steven Tyler has gone back into rehab.

Way back in the mists of time, Steven Tyler was known as one of the "Toxic Twins" (along with bandmate Joe Perry) for his prodigious intake of stimulants and heroin. The alcohol was seen as a mere bagatelle by comparison. Tyler went through rehab in 1986 and has been sober ever since. Except he's heading back into rehab now as a result of addiction to prescription drugs.

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has checked himself into rehab to help overcome an addiction to painkillers

The painkillers come from the treatments he's had over the years for, would you believe it, work related injuries. Falling off stages and things like that: he did it eariler this year when he fell off stage and broke his shoulder blade (a very painful thing to do). Steven Tyler's statement to Rolling Stone included:

'I love Aerosmith; I love performing as the lead singer in Aerosmith. I am grateful for all of the support and love I am receiving and am committed to getting things taken care of. With the help of my family and team of medical professionals, I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain and am eager to be back on the stage and in the recording studio with my bandmates Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton and Brad Whitford.''

And good luck to him and so say all of us. It does rather underline one of the points made by some addiction specialists though. It's not necessarily what you are addicted to which is the problem, it's the addiction itself. And it's easy enough to replace one addiction with another and more difficult to have none at all.
