Is there water on the Moon?

It's an important question for those who want mankind to explore the Universe: is there water on the Moon?

The importance of this question, is there water on the Moon, comes from the way that gravity works. If we humans are to go off and explore the universe, or even the Solar System, then we do need to have a source of water. But hauling water up from the Earth is hugely expensive in energy and therefore in everything else as well. If we're able to find a source of water somewhere up there then the whole process of manned space exploration becomes hugely cheaper.

Yes, the Moon has gravity as well but as it's smaller (and less dense) than the Earth the gravity well is shallower and water can thus be lifted off much more cheaply. So if we find that there is water on the Moon (and we already know that there's soil and energy, thus all the things with which we can make food if we have water) then we've just found out that it's going to be easier to explore than we had thought.

And NASA has indeed just answered our question of is there water on the Moon? Yes:

Nasa has found 'a significant amount' of water inside a crater on the Moon in a discovery that could pave the way for the first manned lunar base. The agency announced that last month's audacious attempt to smash two spacecraft into the Moon's rocky surface to find ice was a major success. The £49million bombing raid threw up a mile-high plume of dust - which included chunks of ice locked away in a deep crater at the lunar south pole. The bottom of the crater had not seen sunlight for billions of years.

Other UK papers have further stories on this discovery of water on the Moon:

Scientists said the "exciting" findings had gone "beyond expectations" as fully formed ice was found in a crater on the planet. They said that the ice – thought to be in granules mixed with grains of Moon dust – heralded a major leap forward in space exploration and boosted hopes of a permanent lunar base.

Yes, there is water on the Moon and yes, this does make a permanent lunar base easier and thus more likely.

If the moon is made up of soil rock and ice crystals and we build on it or dig into it, thus changing it's shape, could that be enough to throw off it's orbit and alter the earths orbit?
