Cameron Diaz's new movie, "The Box" has been condemned as one of the stinkers of the decade just three days after its release.
When audiences were asked to give it a score on a scale that normally goes from A to C they were plumping for the F of absolute and complete failure.
CAMERON DIAZ has made one of the worst films in history, according to moviegoers. In the last decade, only three flicks have had audience feedback as scathing as her new release The Box, say the company who monitor fan reaction to Hollywood movies. CinemaScore compile Friday-night audience ratings for new releases, asking US cinema-goers to grade them. An A is said to signal a long life with a C described as "pretty much a death sentence". The Box - written and directed by Donnie Darko's RICHARD KELLY - scored an F.
That really doesn't bode well for the earning power of that movie: if you cannot get the Friday night audience even vaguely on your side then the movie is going to disappear pretty quickly.
The basic plotline could also have done with a little bit of help. Diaz plays a cash strapped mother who is asked by some mysterious stranger to press the button on a box. For this service she will be paid a million dollars. Yes, well, we all know that bad things happen when mysterious strangers turn up offering money. And bad things do indeed start happening: her son goes deaf and blind for example.
But this is of course just Pandora's Box rewritten for the modern age. In the Greek myth Pandora is told that she must never open the box (which at least gives us the addition of human curiosity to the plot tension) and when she does out fly all the evils, terrors and plagues of mankind which afflict us. The saving grace is that the last to escape is hope. Hope being the one thing that enables us to bear those evils, terrors and plagues.
There is a point to the plot of Pandora's Box: there doesn't seem to have been one to The Box. And those who've seen it do seem to think that it's a right stinker.
