Britney Spears gig in Australia: fans storm out

Fans stormed out of a Britney Spears show in Australia because she was miming.

There seems to be a little difference in expectations of pop stars between Australia and the US. None of us would expect Britney Spears to be singing live at a concert or show. We know very well that her dancing means that live singing is not possible: we would just get pants and gasps of exertion, not a note.

It's also true that Britney's singing capabilities in the studio, without the dancing, are not all that strong, but that's another matter. But according to reports from australia that's not how the australians themselves see it. If they've paid for a concert ticket to hear someone sing then they should be hearing someone singing:

But when she was just a couple of songs into the show dozens of disgruntled fans headed for the exits.

Many had not realised that the star, on stage dressed as a lion tamer, was going to mime.

It has to be said that these sorts of misundertandings are not uncommon. Just because the English, we Americans, the Australians and so on speak what sounds pretty much like the same language does not mean that we are all culturally the same at all.

We know that a Britney Spears concert is a show: they think that "concert" really means concert.

Omg! How rude! I absolutely LOVED her performance, nobody can dance the way she does and carry a tune at the same time. It didn't matter to me if she was singing or not, I wouldn't want her to sing live, that would suck! Would they seriously rather her just stand there and sing her songs? NO. Those people who walked out are ignorant.

Oh, and those people missed out bigtime. I saw it in Tulsa, OK and I seriously don't even know how Britney herself is going to top it. I Love You Britney!!

I am a huge Britney fan, however I know that she lip syncs most if not all of the entire show. Whoever went to the show expecting her to sing live obviously doesn't know anything about music. Anybody with common sense and an ear can tell this. If you notice, her voice always sounds the same in every concert, with the addition of extra riffs here and there. Also with all the dancing and running around that she does, her voice should be a lot more breathy during the songs and it's not. But when she actually speaks to the audience after the song is over, you can hear the difference and the breathiness in her voice. She is very good at lip syncing because she relies on her dancing and performance, not on her voice. She has done this her whole career and it has gotten her by. Please keep in mind that she is not the only performer that does this, however I do feel that she does it A LOT and it would be nice and more personable if she did it less. I think she does it the entire concert, and w

(my comment continued) I think she does it the entire concert, and when you are singing a slow song like "Everytime" where there is no movement or dancing at all, I think she should definitely sing that live instead of lip syncing that.

I saw Britney in Dallas, TX and in Tulsa, Ok this year. Her show in Tulsa was amazing. She sang two songs live for sure. Besides that, she was completely energetic and dancing all over the stage. She put on a great show. People should feel privileged to ever get a chance to SEE Britney in person. I doubt she will ever want to return to Australia if this is truly the treatment she received. However, I doubt people really ran out. Sounds to me like some journalist just doesn't like Britney.

People would have left in the dozens as described, but the place where she performed would probably hold several thousand people. A few dozen leaving would hardly be noticable.
This also leads to the point that labelling Australians as unaware is a bit misleading (especially as we spat out Kylie Minogue), you'd probably find these reactions occur the world over, just that concerts of this type are so common outside Australia that nobody in the media cares.
